ASO Managing Director Vincent Ciccarello said, “In 2016, the ASO announced a new artistic leadership model for the orchestra, with Nicholas Carter at the helm as Principal Conductor – the first Australian to hold such a post for some 30 years.

“Today, I am delighted to announce the extension of Nicholas's contract with the ASO for the 2018 season.

“Nicholas's tenure marks a period of renewal and regeneration for the ASO, and it is no surprise that his increasing profile in Europe and the United States should be reflected in the wonderful news of his appointment as Chief Conductor of Stadttheater Klagenfurt,” Mr Ciccarello said.

Nicholas Carter said, “I am delighted to continue this most special relationship with the Adelaide Symphony. As we continue to explore more of the repertoire together, I feel the relationship deepening and becoming ever more fulfilling.

“Having worked with the orchestra for many years now, I feel so at home there and look forward to continuing to discover, develop and grow, both as an individual and as an organisation,” he said.

“It's the greatest privilege to lead such a tremendous orchestra and I relish the prospect of continuing this wonderful musical journey.”

Mr Carter is set to conduct three opera productions with the Stadttheater Klagenfurt each season, and in addition, he will conduct the Kärntner Sinfonieorchester regularly in their concert season with details to be announced in Spring 2018.

“Klagenfurt am Wörthersee is a place that breathes music,” Mr Carter said.

“Mahler, Brahms and Berg were all drawn to this magical part of the world and my family and I anticipate with great pleasure making our home there.

“Already, I have shared wonderful evenings of music-making with the musicians of the Staatstheater Klagenfurt and the Kärntner Sinfonieorchester and am delighted and honoured to have been invited to become their next Chief Conductor,” Mr Carter said.

Intendant of Stadttheater Klagenfurt Florian Scholz said, “We are most delighted to have appointed Nicholas Carter for our opera and orchestra.”

“He combines at the same time youthful expressivity with great depth and sensibility. He won the hearts of our musicians by storm!”

Mr Carter’s guest conducting career continues to develop in Australia, Europe and North America.

Recent highlights include debuts with BBC Scottish Symphony, MDR Leipzig, Orchestre National de Lille, Oregon Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic, and returns to Sydney, Melbourne and Dallas Symphony Orchestras.
