World Ballet Day 2017

World Ballet Day returns on Thursday 5 October 2017 with 22 hours of live, exclusive behind-the-scenes footage from five of the world’s leading ballet companies.

World Ballet Day 2017

The core international companies that underpin the initiative are The Australian Ballet (TAB), Bolshoi Ballet, The Royal Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada and San Francisco Ballet. World Ballet Day is an offshoot of Royal Ballet Live and first took place on 1 October 2014.

This year’s extraordinary celebration of dance will be streamed live to a massive global audience via Facebook and Tencent; the latter taking the event to over 500 million viewers in China. As each of the five companies lifts the curtain on a range of behind-the-scenes activities from technique classes and rehearsals to backstage preparations and interviews, viewers will gain some understanding of the enormous dedication as well as the power, the passion and the pain that are an integral part of the dancers’ lives.

In addition to the five majors, there will be behind-the-scenes segments from guest companies, including The National Ballet of Japan, Singapore Dance Theatre and The National Ballet of China.

TAB’s broadcast starts at 12 pm on Thursday 5 October and will be hosted by Chris Bath (ABC) and Jarryd Madden (Senior Artist). The five-hour segment will feature rehearsals of ballets, includingAlice's Adventures in Wonderland, David McAllister's The Sleeping Beauty and Alice Topp'sLittle Atlas. There will also be a segment on La Trobe musculoskeletal research using the GAIT Lab, and a live cross to TAB’s regional tour in Wollongong.
