The arts sector is not homogenous and is never static … it is dynamic, innovative and constantly evolving, as it should be. No area of government funding should be immune from review. Questions of how the sector can or should be supported and how to ensure audience access as well as nurturing excellence across all art forms is a complex mix. It is not clear that the recommendations reflect that level of complexity.
The current mix of arts organisations and funding models are the result of many years’ experience of what has been tried before and what has worked. These organisations recommended for merger do interact and while there should always be scope to improve, AMPAG would argue that the current arts ecosystem in Australia is effective and efficient and serves the sector and the government well.
