An increasing number of performances and behind the scenes snapshots are recorded for distribution online, shows are simulcast to regional centres as well as via television, online and in digital cinemas here and abroad.

Online platforms are facilitating interactive education workshops over distance as well as pre and post show discussions, show notes and more.

  • Nearly 8 million people listened or watched a radio broadcast, TV or cinema screening of performances by MPA companies.
  • 308,000 people were social media friends or followers, an increase of 51% from 2010.

Digital Innovation by the AMPAG companies includes;

ACO3D - the ACO's Virtual Orchestra - an immersive, interactive audio-visual installation which delivers specially produced content across Australia and throughout the world. The ACO3D is built using game technology, and gives the audience member the feeling of standing on stage in the middle of a performance-an extraordinary experience.

2014 will see Bell Shakespeare launch of The Macbeth Experiment, where students will upload self-generated content, reinterpreting and reimagining Macbeth through image, sound and film.

Circus Oz The Living Archive is a research project conducted in partnership with RMIT University, the Australia Council, the Arts Centre, La Trobe University and Deloitte Digital, and is funded by the Australian Research Council, the Australia Council and the Arts Centre, with in-kind support from Circus Oz and La Trobe University. The project researches how digital technologies can help the performing arts to drive innovations in repertoire development, performance scholarship and audience development.

Musica Viva in Schools has developed a unique music education software and teaching resource for use on classroom interactive whiteboards (and/or computers and projectors, depending on the IT facilities in each school). The resources was launched as part of our Live Performance Plus program in 2012. In 2013 MVIS then launched a stand-alone digital music resources to be sold to teachers outside our standard Live Performance Plus program. The resources provide teachers with a fun, engaging program of music learning experiences, designed for specific year levels,

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra iPhone app - MSO Learn for iPhone and iPad is the first app of its kind to offer the user an advanced interactive audio-visual exploration of an orchestra, featuring the different instrumental families, individual instruments and the musicians who play them. The app incorporates customised graphics and uncompressed audio to produce an engaging and educational experience for audiences of all ages. MSO Learn is free to download.

Sydney Symphony - In 2011 Sydney Symphony became the first orchestra in the world to stream concerts via a mobile device. Earlier this year, the Sydney Symphony

Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra as Australia's most recorded orchestra, the TSO's reputation outside the state rests largely on its many commercial recordings and broadcasts on the ABC. Last year (2012) TSO presented Synaesthesia , Music of Colour and Mind, a two-day festival of contemporary music, at MONA. It included the Syn[A] team, who have worked with the TSO on measurement of biometric data of musicians.

Companies continue to explore the best ways to digitise collections to reach audiences in an increasing online environment. They are, however, encountering a number of issues in entering this new marketplace. These include appropriate revenue and payment models for performers and creative /copyright holders, technical issues, performers' concerns and the need to create new business models to deal with this changing scenario.

AMPAG wrote a Scoping Paper on the impact of digital technology in 2011 to bring all companies up to speed with new technology developments and to explore different models. The scoping paper has also been used to inform government about these issues and ensure that the arts are not left out of discussions about the future of fast speed broadband.Scoping Paper on the impact of digital technology
